SEO

SEO is a term you may hear a lot of, it stands for Seach Engine Optimisation. Still not a help? essentially it is a collection of methods that can be used to improve your website’s chances of being seen in searches via Search Engines such as Google and Bing.

Being human, the majority of us will not go through pages and pages of search results, most will not go past the first page and may even change their search terms before clicking on the second page. So the aim is to get your site on the first page and as high on that page as possible.

Warning

In trying to make SEO simple, it became a bit War and Peace.  Unintentional but hopefully you will stick with it and carry on reading below.  If not then Dynamiser will help you understand should you use our services.

There are many opinions about SEO and the best practice, and you can pay thousands in consultancy to improve. To be fair it appears to be a dark art and there are many articles on how to improve, and some that say it is not needed! Dynamiser provide a simple SEO approach though.

Imagine little robots travelling around the internet. They are quiet and stealthy and not seen by anyone while they quietly collect information from all web sites to build up their knowledge of the sites to enable the search engines to provide the best results via a ranking system. So any site owner needs to feed the robots with healthy data to increase their ranking.

So the simple approach… First of all, it is about your content. A good site is visited and re-visited and recommended. It is also likely to be linked to from other sites and the robots love this. You can also add links to other sites yourself (although do not go overboard with this as the robots can see the subterfuge and rank you lower)

So we do not compromise content for the sake of SEO no matter what the experts may say. The next step is to have Keywords. Keywords are a simple way to tag your site with relevant words such as “Builder” and “Builders”. If you are a builder and you do not use the obvious keyword then no one is going to find you in a search for a builder in their local area. But again do not stuff your site with loads of keywords as the robots shy away from this approach as well. A good site has key focused keywords.

The next step is to make sure you have the snippet worded just right, it focuses on what you can offer. If not done right then the robots will try and find one from your site’s text and this may not be what you want potential customers to see or be cropped leaving sentences unfinished and looking bad. The maximum is around 160 characters although Google did expand to 230 recently, remember other search engines will be used by customers and the general advice is to stick to the 160.

The final consideration is called readability, this is part of “good content”. Readable text is critical and there are various recommendations on the amount of words on a page, length of sentences and use of techniques such as non-passive sentences and transition words. And Dynamiser can assist with this but do not get hung up on hitting the recommended numbers of any these and risk the value of the actual content.

Non-passive example:
BAD: “The coffee is ground in the shop”
GOOD: “Shop ground coffee“

Transition example:
BAD: “Great Coffee served here”
GOOD: “Great Coffee served here to brighten up your day“

SEO is not instant, the wonderful robots do not come to your site immediately, it can take a few weeks. It also takes time to build up the number of visits to your site and any back-links so be patient. As long as your content is good, your keywords focused and snippets focused and relevant you will start being seen in searches very soon.

Dynamiser uses a WordPress plugin called Yoast SEO. Yoast is the leading WordPress SEO tool and used by over 8 million sites and counting. Yoast will allow you to create your snippets and keywords per page and then give a useful score and advice on how to improve. It also audits the content and gives you a score and advice. It uses a simple traffic light system but even Yoast say to not get too hung up on trying to achieve a green light. For example, you will stand no chance of getting a good readability score on a testimonial page where all the content is actually written by your wonderful customers; they would not like you re-wording!

Initially, Yoast is free but you can go “Pro” for a small charge which will give additional SEO impact. it also has separate plugins that target local SEO, useful for a local business in a competitive market, as well as eCommerce specific and local eCommerce specific plugins to help even further and Dynamiser will assist you with choosing the right one.
