Other Accessible Ideas

Outside of the guidelines and standards and advice discussed to help make websites both accessible and look good, there are other ideas that Dynamiser consider worth thinking about.

  • Flip Boxes
  • Tooltips
  • Motorway Signs

Not only can these add value to a site for the visually impaired, they are great for all of your visitors.

Flip Boxes

Flip Boxes are an attractive way to fit more information and add links to other pages.  The front can be text, icons or images, the flip side can be more text or images and buttons.

So why not use that text on the flip side to add great text that will be picked up by Screen Readers.  Click below for more information on Flip Boxes.

Let’s look at some examples.  Below are 3 Flip Boxes, they look like Icon Boxes but when the mouse hovers the icon is flipped to more text plus a link button.  When the Screen Reader reaches the flip box the same flip happens and the text is read out.  This allows for more text to be read out than is normally used in Icon Boxes or Images and other features.

Aria Labels can still be used to add even more information if your design still limits the amount of text needed.  Try out the 3 Flip Boxes below

Tooltips

Tooltips have been around for a while but not included with Elementor.  The feature simply displays “tips” when an element is hovered over.  Great for abbreviations and acronyms or explanations on values stated within text and  a whole host of other situations.

So if used to help explain anything on a web page then why not use to aid the visually impaired.  And they are still great for all of your visitors.

As not available within Elementor, Dynamiser will help you find the right WordPress Plugin to give you the best tooltips.  Be warned: many are an additional cost and some come within a suite of Elementor add-ons (also at a cost) but other features in these suites may give you even more great functionality.   Most offer pretty much the same functionality but the main objective it to display more text and larger text at the same time. Links to helpful pages and Elementor suites later.

For now, let’s look at some example mock-ups to give you an idea of how they look.

Motorway Signs

OK, not actually a feature but something to think about.  In the UK the motorway signs are designed like so

  • Blue Background
  • White lettering
  • Capitalised Lowercase wording
  • Special font
example motorway sign

There are reasons for this design

  • Easy to read for everyone
  • Great for reading at speed
  • Words with lowercase lettering easier to identify at speed as the brain fills in the blanks.
  • Perfect colour contrast that would not affect the colour blind.

And there has been no need to change this since the 1960’s.  Why is this worth a thought? Well it is a great example of a design that works for all.  And now most of us are experienced web users we do scroll or swipe up and down pages at speed, just like driving on a motorway.

Dynamiser is not suggesting that all clients sites are created with a blue background but this does highlight how an alternative to a white background is worth considering.

The font is called Transport but has been superseded for web use by New Transport and its development was done in collaboration with Margaret Calvert who was responsible for the original font.  It is not available as standard but can be purchased online from A2 Type.
